Marika Buhagiar

Marika Buhagiar
(student)

My name is Marika Buhagiar and I was born on March 31st, 1999. I currently live in the village of Siggiewi, along with my parents and two older brothers, Andre and Antoine. Growing up with both my mother and father practising artistic skills on the side (sewing and drawing/carpentry respectively), my siblings and I were exposed to a creative environment at a young age, which I have developed and carried on with me to this day.
My education in the arts began in secondary school when I chose to study Textile Studies. During this time, I developed a passion for fashion, specifically garment tailoring. By the end of secondary school, I was confident that I wanted to further my studies in the creative arts. Post-Secondary I applied for the Art and Design course at Mcast, where I focused on fashion and product design. During the course of those two years I applied and got to intern for multiple fashion businesses including Bortex, Charles and Ron, and also, Rosemarie Abela, where I continued to sharpen my skills and expand my knowledge. Although I greatly adored fashion, I wanted to try something different, and so I decided to pursue a degree in photography. I became greatly interested in the medium after I bought a smartphone and a small compact camera for travelling, in addition to having the opportunity to tag along on some fashion shoots.
To no surprise, today I find myself interested in fashion photography, but also a lot more. From what I have experienced so far, I am greatly intrigued by traditional photographic processes, dark room techniques, and documentation in form of photographic stories. This being said, I am excited and looking forward to further exploration of this medium as well as perhaps new ones.
